Moving survey.wm.edu

Brief Explanation of upgrade process

The process of moving the survey.wm.edu website from it's current server to a new server also includes an upgrade in the version of ColdFusion from version 5.0(current) to version 6.1(new). To make the hardware replacement/upgrade process easier in the future, we are also moving all files for the website to a dedicated file server rather than having them on the webserver itself. With the combination of these changes, each of the active sites under survey.wm.edu will need to be tested with the new version of ColdFusion.
To make this process as painless as possible, I have initially only setup sites that I am aware of people actively using. At the moment that list is as follows(links below point to the testing site)

If you don't see your site in the list and it still needs to work, please contact Eric Myers in IT (x12586 or emmyer@wm.edu) to register your datasource and make your site active. I will not delete any of the files for any of the sites not listed here, but the webpages will not work properly unless I am contacted.

After each active site has been tested and fixed as needed, the url name for survey.wm.edu will be moved to the new server. At that same time I will copy the database files from the current survey.wm.edu to the new server to preserve any data input on the live site while the sites were being tested.


File Information:

All files for the websites at survey.wm.edu were copied to their new home at roughly 2:30pm on 3/22/2005. After the testing phase is complete, I will copy all of the Access database files from the old server to the new server to preserve any activity on the live survey sites during the testing process.
The new home for the website files is:

NEW UNC path:
\\netapp\virtualhosts\survey.wm.edu
NEW SFTP path via the SFTP server webftp.wm.edu:
/VIRTUALHOSTS/survey.wm.edu


Testing URL Information:
Please review your site to confirm that your code and survey works correctly with the new version of ColdFusion server, either click on the link in the intro section or follow the instructions below. After everyone has reviewed their code for their sites and they are all confirmed to be working, the original url will point to the new location.

Testing URL's
same as survey.wm.edu url, but substitute: "cfdev.wm.edu:88" for survey.wm.edu.
For the demo site the live url is survey.wm.edu/Demo/Index.cfm while it's testing url is cfdev.wm.edu:88/Demo/Index.cfm


What do I have to do?
Follow these easy steps:

  • Test your site(check the url at the top of the page)
  • If it works correctly, email Eric Myers and let him know.
  • If it doesn't, try and fix the pages that are broken - review the information at Updating/Fixing Broken Pages

    If you discover that one of your pages doesn't work on the new server, be sure to modify the web page only at the new file location. If you have any problems with that or are unclear what to do, please contact Eric Myers in IT.
